Khosla Ventures’ Series B Leads to Synchron’s $40M Acquisition.
NEW YORK (BUSINESS WIRE)-Synchron announced today that it had received $40M in Series B financing from Khosla Ventures, a Silicon Valley venture capital firm. Synchron is just a head in minimally intrusive, implantable brain-computer interface technology (BCI). It uses the jugular vein for access to the brain. Synchron Australia has begun a clinical trial that has enrolled four paralyzed patients. The problems are currently being evaluated for their ability to control digital devices.
Dr. Thomas Oxley, Synchron CEO, said that the technology “has the potential to affect humanity on a large scale positively.” “The funding will allow us to deepen clinical trials and pave the way for FDA approval of implantable brain-computer interfaces. This is a crucial step toward realizing the therapeutic potential of this emerging industry.
Funds will be used for a pivotal clinical trial in the U.S. to test the StentrodeTM technology, which allows patients with limb paralysis to use digital devices. Funds will fund a pipeline of stimulating and neurointerventional products that address multiple neurological indications.
Forefront Capital Partners and ID8 Investments are other investors. The round also included existing investors, including NeuroTechnology Investors and METIS Innovative. The total amount raised since the company’s formation is $59 million, including support from the U.S. and Australian governments.
“We believe Synchron’s minimally-invasive approach, which brings stents commonly used into the 21st Century, will be defining in the future of brain-machine interface,” stated Alex Morgan, MD, Ph.D., and partner at Khosla Ventures. “My uncle had a stroke that left him paralyzed. Synchron’s focus on paralysis is a vital mission.
Synchron’s motor neuroprosthesis platform includes the Stentrode. It aims to improve patient’s ability to control digital devices. The neuroprosthesis converts thoughts associated with attempted movements to wireless Bluetooth commands. This allows patients to communicate with their loved ones and caregivers and improve their daily function. The neuroprosthesis is implanted using a minimally invasive procedure commonly used for stroke treatment.
“By using the blood vessels as the natural highway into the brain, we can access all areas, which traditionally required open surgery and removal of a skull in multiple locations,” added Dr. Oxley, a trained neuro interventionist.
Synchron has 60 patents filed in the space of interventional neuro electrophysiology. These include paralysis, epilepsy and depression, Parkinson’s Disease, pain, addiction, and other non-medical conditions.
Dr. Morgan said that future generations of the Stentrode would open up new avenues for direct two-way interaction between the brain and the body. This will allow the possibility to treat many neuropsychiatric conditions and address significant areas of unmet medical need.
